- Recent meetings with the CO and his key staff have taken preparations for the CORAL50 Celebrations a step closer.
- It has been confirmed by Army HQ that 1RAR will receive NEW COLOURS at the CORAL50 Parade in 2018. CO has provided letters and briefs up the chain of command to the Chief of Army. There are apparently new Battle Honours under consideration too and these may very well make it onto our new colours. We would be the first if they do! The BIG PARADE is on Wednesday 16 May.
- A big set of tiered seating has been ordered for the Parade Ground for group photos. We might even bring 'Arch' Frayley (long time photographer along with his father before that) along for old times sake!
- The BIG all-in-dinner on Wednesday evening is shaping up to be a great event. Looks like we can keep costs for attendees to $25 a head. Numbers will be required for access to the base and catering. Make sure you register. Serious fireworks too.
- Funds have been set aside for a free shuttle for movement between Townsville hotels and Lavarack Barracks. As the numbers registering grows we're getting increasing traction with hotels taking an interest in the numbers.
- There is a diarama of the Battle for Coral being built and will be on display in BHQ before the end of the year. It will remain there for 2018 and then move to the Museum for posterity
- 1RAR is arranging for a painting and sculpture to be commissioned especially for the event. If anyone has a concept they think would be good, please let us know. Use the CONTACT button to let us know. We are looking for something more substantial than a lone soldier in a uniform figurine that has become the staple. Let's get imaginative!
- Pre-Registration is open on the Event Page. No obligation to come by Pre-registering but it'll give us an idea of the size of the reunion and how much 'pull' we'll have to negotiate hotel deals etc. And you can see who else has warned-in for the big event!
- 15-18 May 2018 is Coral Week at 1RAR and this year is big as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of The Battle for FSB Coral. We will enhance the week with a presentation of new colours by the Governor General and host a number of other Reunions. The Somalia Reunion is shaping up to be big also. We have been notified of a few other reunions for groups, tours of duty etc and encourage these too. Thursday night has been set aside for all reunions. Have a look at the outline program to see how it all fits together. We'd appreciate a Point of Contact for each of the reunion groups so we can help de-conflict venues and offer support.

Future Reunions.

Your thoughts can be be sent to either Ray or Jack.
Any offers to arrange future Reunions are very welcome.
The Battle of FSPB Coral Unit Citation for Gallantry UCG.
Last Year we advised that the submission for a Unit Citation for Gallantry had been sent to Defence. More specifically to the section called Defence Honours and Awards or DHA. A belated submission such as ours is then sent to the ‘Higher Up’s, in this case to the Chief of Army (CA) who then does a ‘desktop review’ of the submission. This internal review then uses the principles and rules that were put in place for ‘belated’ submission during the ‘Valour Inquiry’. At this stage there are many ‘technical’ reasons for the submission to be rejected and it would appear from my reading of reports and reviews that this is universal for belated submissions.
Consequently we have received advice from the Chief of the Army (CA) Angus Campbell that he has decided to '... not to proceed with any action...' on our submission for the UCG.At the same time the CA spelt out our rights of appeal to the Defence Honours and Awards Appeals Tribunal. (DHAAT) We anticipated this. The DHAAT is an independent body and answers directly to the Defence Minister. The technicality here is that it was necessary for our submission to be rejected by the CA for it to become reviewable by the DHAAT. Acting on other advice we will not be appealing to the DHAAT but intend to APPEAL DIRECT TO THE MINISTER with a request for an INQUIRY.
If you wish to find out more information then check out all the reports and reviews on the DHAAT website. https://defence-honours-tribunal.gov.au/
If you wish to find out more information then check out all the reports and reviews on the DHAAT website. https://defence-honours-tribunal.gov.au/
At the time of writing (Dec 2016) we are currently reviewing the DHAAT reports in order to focus on specific grounds for appeal with a plan to have this to Minister Tehan by February 2017.
Being more pragmatic, we know that we have a comprehensive submission and there are good grounds for appeal… BUT even having the best argument does not guarantee us getting any further. It is obvious that other submissions have been successful mostly by using other measures in conjunction with the appeal process. Therefore we see it necessary that an on-going strategy be developed that will enhance our chances.
We know and the Official History recognizes that the Battle of Coral Balmoral was the biggest show for Australian troops during the Vietnam War. This fact by itself is not a criteria that can be used in the determination for a UCG. We are seeking recognition for the combined ‘Gallantry’ displayed by the troops, on the ground, under combat conditions and our argument has to reflect that, and this is the focus of our submission. In our case it is the sustained effort by all troops, units, sub-units and detachments in AO Surfers and Surfers II form 12 May to 6 June 1868.
Once the appeal is sent to the Minister our strategy will be one to increase the public awareness of the Battle of Coral Balmoral. More specifically we will be targeting politicians and the media to achieve this. This will mean that all of us will need to get more active in communicating our story. Some have already commenced this process and they are to be congratulated. From the feedback I have received the release of the DOCO has had limited exposure and success in raising awareness. This does not reflect the quality of the program but rather due to it not being on free to air TV. I have produced a number of summary documents and a Power-point show of the main points of the operation and these have been distributed earlier. We have prepared a script in ‘plain language’ for a five minute video suitable for You Tube and other promotions. This should be released in February.
There is increasing activity on Facebook and I strongly recommend that everyone get active on the following Pages:
It is emphasized that the UCG submission is on behalf of ALL troops who served at Coral Balmoral. Consequently we already have a wide and comprehensive backing from individuals and Unit Associations. It is anticipated that the proposed awareness campaign will reflect this base. We will be giving it our best shot.
Rest Easy… Jack Parr.
Vale Pepe
As you all are aware by now, we lost Pepe (our Officer Commanding Reunions) very suddenly in early July, not long after our very successful Coolangatta Reunion. We as a group have a lot to be thankful for, as Pepe was the driving force behind our reunions for the last 15 plus years. He dragged many of us out of the military wilderness to share a few good memories, tell a few lies, have a couple of drinks and a few laughs. Pepe had very strong ideas on what our group is about and how we go about running our reunions. Not everyone agreed with Pepe all of the time, but I’m sure we all agree that his heart was always in the right place. Pepe,” Stand Down”, your duty is done and you are now “Safe behind the Wire” and in good company with so many other Coral Veterans. Farewell old mate. We will always remember you.
